John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone, including science fiction. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes.

The Valley of the Moon Spanish Edition Jack London Books

The story line may be dated but the ideals and trials of the characters still ring true today. Humans have suffered and then won out. Humans have seen racial and ethnic troubles but have found ways to cooperate and respect each other. And finally, humans have searched for their own piece of perfection and sometimes they find it. Beautiful vocabulary and description in this book.

The Valley of the Moon Spanish Edition Jack London Books Reviews

Fascinating to see California through London's eyes. The class and cultural evolutions were also fascinating. A great read for wine country enthusiasts.
The Valley of the Moon is a bit different than most of Jack London's novels. I was expecting something different, and I was not disappointed. I spent about half the book trying to figure out how Saxon and Billy would actually make it to the moon. I was expecting something along the lines of The Scarlet Plague, that is science fiction, but got something entirely different. For my taste it was a bit disappointing, still it was a pretty good read but not quite as good as his other better known works.
The story is a moving story read it before . But this book was missing half of the book , like 200 pages of the end part of the story was never put into the book.
The first half of the book was fascinating, gritty, and painted a picture of labor strife so famous in San Francisco and Oakland. The second half slowly became a tourism guide of the California and Oregon coastal ranges, with unbelievable chance encounters with earlier characters in the novel. It got far fetched and too sweetly romantic. But I didn't regret the read, because London paints pictures with his words. It was perhaps more interesting to me than it might be to others, since I live in San Francisco and know all of the locations London covers in the story.
Accustomed to reading the raw adventure stories of Jack.London, this one surprised me..London.had a tender side. The book also gives an honest account of life for the ordinary person.in the early 20th century. A good read.
This story is long in the writing and offers some surprises about Jack London.
Never knew he could write a story from a woman's perspective and offer it
with so much environmental history of the Oakland area and virtually all parts
south to Carmel-by-the-Sea & Big Sur as well as north well beyond Ft. Bragg.
And the ending is very satisfying after such a long and inquistive journey. This
story is N-O-T in three of my collection of Jack London short & long stories.
Perhaps because it is not quite his normal rustic type narrative, but very much
true to the times around 1913 and thereafter.
While it is not one of London's best novels, I have found it fascinating to read his take on what was happening to the working class in the US in the period just before we entered WWI. The debates over whether the unions were ultimately going to help improve wages and the real concerns about the increasing wealth of the business tycoons of the day at a time when laborers wages were being undercut by influx of immigration. -- All before the "triumphs" of the Progressive Era and the New Deal legislation that gave unions some government backing.

Echoes of today.
